Poker's Betting RulesPoker is a group of card games that share a number of traits, such as hand rankings, betting rules, and general gameplay sequence. In a game of poker, actions proceed clockwise, which is to say that the next action happens to the left of the previous player. Most poker games start with a forced bet, afterwards the hands are dealt, and a round of betting follows. In order to remain in contention to win the pot, each player is supposed to either match the amount of money that the player before them had put into the pot, or bet a larger amount. Betting a larger amount than the previous bet is called "raising." There are many poker variants, but the winning hand is usually designated to be either the higher hand, or the lower hand. A poker game's final round is called a "showdown." During a showdown, the players in contention show their hands so that the winning hand could be determined, and the pot given or distributed accordingly. Poker is frequently as much a psychological game as it is a game of chance and skill. Because of the fact that betting in poker is completely voluntary, after the first, forced bet, a lot of what carries the game rides on whether or not a player believes that they can win the game. If a player does not think that the amount of money they are betting will have a positive expected value -which is to say that they do not believe that their investment will pay off- they do not have to bet anymore. On any round, a player can fold. When a player folds, they put down their cards and forfeit any chances of winning the pot, but are no longer obligated to continue putting money into the pot. If all of the players fold except for one, the remaining player wins the pot. Because this player would be the only one left, this player's hand would no longer be relevant to whether or not the pot would go to them, and so they are not required to show their hand. In this sense, you could have a hand that would probably not stand a chance of winning in a showdown, but because you are the only player not fold, you can win the game. If a person knows how to "read" people and accurately gauge their fellow players' morale or expectations of victory, it is possible for a player to bluff their way into winning a hand at poker simply by refusing to fold. |
